Kingdoms and Places in Legacy of the Eldric
Allund
Allund is one of the kingdoms central to The Prophecy
of the Kings. Its capital city is Dundalk. Pendrat is a market town known
for its annual fair, while Kinlin Castle is owned by Kaplyn’s friend, the Baron.
The kingdom also contains KinAnor, a vast forest where Lomar’s people live, and
the Turn Marsh, which lies between the forest and the mountains. Deep within
those mountains is Ban Kildor, a mysterious peak whose hidden cave becomes the
destination at the end of Legacy of the Eldric.
People of Allund and Beyond
Kaplyn is a prince of Allund, seventh in line to the
throne. Restless and bored with court life, he longs for adventure.
Lars comes from a land across the sea where a storm
rages without end. A large, powerful man, he is initially most interested in
ale, but he deeply misses his wife and children. After being shipwrecked on the
Allund shore, he is left friendless until Kaplyn finds him held prisoner by
outlaws in a wood between Dundalk and Pendrat.
Vastra is a self-professed sorcerer whom Kaplyn and
Lars meet in Pendrat. Since only the Eldric were known to practise sorcery, and
they vanished many years ago after the Krell Wars, Vastra’s powers suggest a
hidden connection to them. He is secretive about his past, and a darker side to
his nature is only hinted at. Later, Kaplyn discovers that Vastra is his
half-brother.
Journey and Key Events
Vastra tricks Kaplyn and Lars into travelling to Tanel, an
ancient ruined Eldric city. There, he restores the true city through sorcery
and persuades Kaplyn to retrieve an ancient amulet. Kaplyn is drawn into a
nightmare journey and, when he refuses to hand over the amulet, Vastra becomes
furious.
The group then travels to Kinlin Castle to meet Kaplyn’s
friend, the Baron. While the librarian attempts to decipher the Eldric script
on the amulet, the first clear sign of a demon appears: it attacks and kills
him.
From Kinlin Castle, the three men continue to KinAnor
Forest, where they meet Lomar. He is an Alvalan prince, one of the Alvalah, a
race of albinos. Lomar fears the Prophecy and believes he must join Kaplyn and
the others on their journey.
They travel through the Turn Marsh to Ban Kildor, hoping to
discover what happened to the Eldric and why they vanished. The Eldric and
their sorcery are crucial to defeating the demons, as described in Drachar’s
Demons. Deep within Ban Kildor, they find a fossilised tree. Power erupts
from its heart, and two buds appear before quickly crystallising. Kaplyn takes
one crystal and Vastra takes the other.
As they flee toward the exit, Vastra reveals his true nature
and betrays them. The amulet describes a spell that prevents anyone but the
Eldric from leaving. As a result, Kaplyn, Lars and Lomar are turned to stone.
Fantasy Creatures and Relics
·
A possessed wolf appears at a farm where Kaplyn,
Lars and Vastra stay shortly after the Pendrat Fair. This is the first hint that demons may be on the ascendancy.
·
A demon appears at Kinlin Castle and is
vanquished. There was considerable doubt about the possessed wolf, but now the evidence is all too real and very, very scary.
·
Kaplyn discovers an Eldric sword in Tanel, one
of the nine blades forged and described in Drachar’s Demons.
·
The Krell are gangly demon-hybrids that live
mainly in inaccessible places. Since their defeat in the Krell Wars, the Krell
Tribes are no longer united.
